Donate a Horse

It takes a horse with special qualities to be awarded the title of “Heartland Therapy Horse”. First and foremost is temperament – a pleasant, easy‐going, willing attitude is a must. While we do accept donated horses, not all horses are suitable for our program. The ideal therapy horse is:

  • 8 to 16 years oldAce
  • Geldings are preferred
  • 12 to 15.3 hands
  • Calm, quiet and easy‐going disposition
  • In good health and sound at the walk, trot and canter
  • Experienced in arenas, horse shows, trail riding, and/or 4-H
  • Experienced with children or beginner riders
  • Has excellent ground manners (leading, grooming, stand tied, hoof care)
  • Current on vaccinations and have a negative Coggins test

Heartland has a 30 to 60 day trial period for potential horses. After a successful trial period, horses are accepted into our program and provided excellent care. Horses not suitable for our program are returned to their owner.
