Horse Powered Reading

Horse Powered Reading is an Equine Assisted Learning program for children of all abilities reading up to a 5th grade level. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is experiential learning program that combines a horse, a certified teacher and a unique learning environment to help students develop critical reading skills.

Horses are motivating and encouraging partners for the development of critical reading skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension skills and problem-solving skills.

Horse Powered Reading combines equine assisted learning with research-based reading strategies to help students see and experience reading with their mind, body and emotions.

Fluency – Decoding – Vocabulary – Phonemic Awareness

Comprehension – Problem Solving

Horses are social animals who offer unconditional positive regard, supporting students to try new things, learn and grow. Partnering with horses helps students reflect on and change their approach to learning, challenges and relationships. Horse Powered Reading sessions are developed to address each individual’s learning process, helping students create new patterns of learning through positive encouragement in a supportive environment.

Sessions are designed to:

  • Build critical reading skills
  • Overcome obstacles to reading
  • Develop self-confidence and persistence in learning
  • Empower students to transfer acquired skills to overall academic success

Horse Powered Reading will be offered in 2019 starting with an option of three mini-camps to get the students started, then will continue with weekly sessions that can continue through the school year. Students can do just the mini-camps or weekly classes separately, but the program works best when starting with a mini-camp and continuing with weekly sessions.

Mini-Camps

Horse Powered Reading is a summer program designed to enhance and improve reading skills and prevent the loss of reading skills over the summer break. The program will kick off the summer with three mini-camps. Camps are two hours a day, three days a week. Campers will benefit the most by coming for mini-camp, then continue throughout the summer with 8 weekly, hour-long classes. Campers will be challenged to build connections with their horse, their teacher and other campers while exploring basic reading skills. Camps will combine focused development of these skills with hands-on learning while partnering with a horse. Campers can choose from three mini-camps to start their summer program. Camps will be offered from 4:30-6:30pm on the following dates:

June 4–6

June 18–20

July 16–18

Mini-camp fee: $150.00

Weekly Sessions

Weekly sessions will be offered to continue improvements in critical reading skills on an ongoing basis. Students will benefit the most by coming for mini-camp, then continue throughout the summer with 8 weekly, hour-long classes. Campers will be challenged to build connections with their horse, their teacher and other campers while exploring basic reading skills. Campers will combine focused development of these skills with hands-on learning while partnering with a horse.

8-week summer program fee: $200.00
